About me
Gemma Lucy Smart is a PhD candidate in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney, where she researches the history of mental health self-help, consumer activism, and Mad Pride's relationship to the disability and neurodiversity movements. She is a senior lived experience academic and Senior Research Officer at the Centre for Disability Studies, and holds national leadership roles as Chair of the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA) and President of the Australasian Association for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science (AAHPSSS). Her work bridges co-production research, disability and mental health advocacy, and policy, and was recognised with a 2026 Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training (ADCET) Accessibility in Action Award.
